Subway Sect, The Slits and The Prefects play the last date of the 'White Riot' tour at the California Ballroom, Dunstable tonight. No fataliies occurred just two arrests and one riot. Subway Sect end their set  jamming to the Velvet's 'Sister Ray' along with the Slits and the Prefects. This session made it's way onto the obscure 'Y' pre-release Slits record. Topper Headon of the Clash celebrates his birthday today. He was born today in Bromley, Kent, UK in 1955.

The Filth on illegal - (Dont Care collection)THE POLICE are a mixed group of American drummer Stewart Copeland, Englishman bassist Gordon "Sting" Sumner and Corsican guitarist Henry Padovani. They have their debut single out this week. It's on the new indipendent "Illegal Records" label, funded and started by Stuart's brother, Miles Copeland. Practically everything about the recording had its genesis with Stewart Copeland. He wrote both songs, he started the band, arranged the recording session, set up the label with his brother and did the artwork for the sleeve. The tracks are "Fall Out," an up tempo screecher and "Nothing Achieving." The band has a dodgy band wagon jumping background Copeland only recently left progressive art-rockers Curved Air and Sting is a former member of Newcastle jazz band The Last Exit. Henry Padovani is the only real punk amongst em but he was soon dropped. The Police have just finished a short tour with Cherry Vanilla and hit the road on their own within 24 hours. The single soons sells out it's intitial 2,000 copies and son enters the UK independent charts.
